Spotlight on Sue Young

Sue Young has recently received the Mary E. Hoffman Award for Excellence in music teaching. This award is given in recognition of Mary Hoffman, an icon in music education in the state of Illinois. The award is given by the Illinois Music Educator's Association (IMEA). Sue was nominated by former student teacher, Ryan Eikmeier, who is now a middle school teacher at Carl Sandburg Jr. High in Rolling Meadows. The award not only recognizes excellence in teaching, but also a commitment to the total music program. Sue was honored to receive the award at the IMEA State Convention in Peoria on January 30th at the General Session of the Convention. In her remarks, Sue put her emphasis on the importance of mentoring, citing her mentors in High School and in District 28. Sue said that she had been encouraged many times to "get out and show what she does" to the larger musical community, but stressed that she felt more comfortable in the classroom. The reason that she entered the teaching profession was her passion for facilitating student learning, and that is still her overriding mission. In conclusion, Sue cited the mantra she counts on "Teach only love, for that is all you are".

IN MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED, SUCCESSFUL TEACHING SUE HAS LEARNED THAT:

  • Students must be the reason for all that we do in education.
  • Patience and flexibility are essential to successful education.
  • Self-esteem comes from successes.
  • Mistakes are what learning is about-we should not be afraid of them.
  • Students will live up to your expectations-don't apologize for lofty goals.
  • Technology is wonderful.
  • I love learning as much as teaching.
  • A sense of humor is very important on a day-to-day basis.
